PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (20-22, 11-9 Ivy) closed out the regular season with a 5-4 win over Penn (17-27, 8-13 Ivy) at Brown Softball Field on Saturday (May 2).
The Bears sent their four seniors – Lily Berlinger, Annie Finch, Jasmine Hsiao and Cameron Zytkewicz Ray – out in style, closing out their home careers with a sweep over the Quakers.
Abby Bettencourt led Brown's offense, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a home run and four RBI. Alyssa Villarde and Kaicee Klus had the other two Brown hits.
Finch got the start on Senior Day and was stellar in the circle, earning the win (2-1), going 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits before having to leave the game after being hit on the hand with a comebacker.
Edie Cobb threw 1.1 innings in relief, allowing one run and Macy Borowski earned the save with a scoreless seventh, striking out the final batter of the game.
After Finch stranded runners on first and second in the first inning, Brown gave the Las Vegas native some run support quickly. Elli Thompson walked before Klus singled on an infield bunt. The second pitch to Bettencourt from Ainsley Pemberton was drilled over the left field wall on a line to put Brown up 3-0.
Finch stranded another two runners in the second and Brown started the bottom of the frame with a double from Villarde. After a pitching change, Berlinger hit a ground ball to first. With the out being made at first after a bobble, Villarde kept rounding third and beat the throw home to make it 4-0.
Klus started the third with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bettencourt struck again, singling up the middle to score Klus.
Penn would cut into the lead scoring four runs in the top of the fifth, including an RBI single that hit Finch and forced a pitching change. With runners on first and second and two outs, Cobb got the strikeout swinging to end the inning.
Penn put the pressure on in the sixth, getting a runner to third after a one out double. With two outs, a line drive back up the middle was snagged by Cobb to end the inning and keep the Bears ahead.
Brown went to its ace Borowski in the seventh to close out the game, sitting the Quakers down in order.
