PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (19-21, 10-9 Ivy) clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a sweep over Penn (17-26, 8-12 Ivy) on Friday (May 1) as the Bears beat Penn, 5-2 and 10-9 at Brown Softball Field.
Macy Borowski was phenomenal both in the circle and at the plate for Brown. The junior won the first game throwing a complete game and then finished off the final three innings of game two. Over the course of the 10 innings, Borowski struck out eight batters and allowed five earned runs.
At the plate, Borowski hit for the cycle over the course of the two games, going a combined 4-for-8 and driving in seven runs.
Abby Bettencourt collected five hits on the day, including going 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI in the second game. Bettencourt is the first Bear to have three doubles in a game since Lilly Burns had three against Holy Cross on March 13, 2024.
GAME 1: Brown 5, Penn 2
Brown picked up nine hits with Borowski and Kaicee Klus each picking up two hits in a 5-2 win to start the day against the Quakers. Borowski earned the win with the complete game victory.
The Bears got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Maya Choksi singled to start the game and Bettencourt was hit by a pitch with one out. Borowski then hit her first triple of the season to right field to make it 2-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Klus reached on an infield single to score Cameron Zytkewicz Ray.
In the fourth, Jasmine Hsiao tripled to the right center field gap, and two batters later, Elli Thompson singled to right to make it 4-0.
Penn scored their two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Bears quickly responded in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Bettencourt singled and Torii Ramirez entered the game as a runner. With a full count, Borowski doubled to the wall in left center to score Ramirez and put the Bears up 5-2 for the final score.
GAME 2: Brown 10, Penn 9
Brown clinched its spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a wild game in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Brown had 13 hits on the day with Thompson, Klus and Borowski each collecting two, behind Bettencourt's four.
Annie Finch picked up the win in relief for her second win of the season and Borowski closed out the game with the final three innings.
The Bears scored first after a walk by Thompson, followed by back-to-back singles from Klus and Bettencourt.
Penn jumped ahead with a two-out bases clearing double in the top of the second and led 4-1 after the top of the third.
Brown answered in the third, beginning with two one-out doubles by Thompson and Klus. Bettencourt then doubled home Thompson before Borowski singled home both Klus and Bettencourt to tie the game. After Zytkewicz Ray reached on an error, a single by Lilly Burns drove in another run. Alyssa Villarde hit a sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning.
Penn cut into Brown's lead with a run in the top of the fourth but again the Bears had a response. The Bears had two runners on with two outs and Bettencourt delivered again with another double to score two and put the Bears up 8-5. After a pitching change, Borowski hit a moonshot to dead center field for a two-run home run, putting the Bears up 10-5.
Penn scored two in the fifth and then made the game interesting in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on, three-straight singles scored two runs to make it 10-9.
Borowski hit the next batter to load the bases and put the tying run just 60 feet away. On a 1-2 pitch, Borowski got a ground ball to second and Zytkewicz Ray made the play to first to end the game.
