PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A five-run eighth inning and a three-hit shutout from the pitching staff lifted the Brown baseball team to a 10-0 win in eight innings over Merrimack on Wednesday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.

Mark Henshon and Christian Butera had two hits apiece, Mika Petersen had three RBIs, and Alex Benevento and Buetra added two RBIs each. Benevento and Matt Luigs scored twice and swiped two bases each to help the Bears steal a season-high five bags.

On the mound, Brown's pitching staff did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Senior Dylan Reid started and retired all three batters he faced in the first with one strikeout. Sophomore Byran Yang relieved Reid and tossed 4.0 solid innings, earning the win while allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three. Matt Wilmarth threw 2.0 hitless innings, and Camren Piwnicki threw a scoreless eighth inning.

Brown jumped on the board early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Henshon drew a one-out walk and scored from first on a double by Benevento. Petersen followed with an RBI fielder's choice.

The Bears pushed three more runs across on two hits in the fourth inning. Logan Meusy led off with a walk and scored on a single by Andrew Hanlon, Henshon sent a single through the right side for a two-out RBI single, and Benevento knocked in another run with a fielder's choice to make it 5-0.

Henshon reaches base for the third time in as many at bats with this RBI single to right field. Hanlon scores and its 4-0 Brown in the fourth.

Merrimack used a pair of singles to load the bases with one out in the eighth inning before Piwnicki got a ground ball to short to escape the frame.

Brown put the game away with five runs in the eighth inning to invoke the mercy rule win. After two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out, Luigs scored on a passed ball, Petersen singled in two runs with a hit to center field, and Butera ended the game by lining a two-run triple down the right field line.

Brown will return to action this weekend with a three-game Ivy League series at Dartmouth. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.
