Comeback Bid Comes Up Short as Women’s Lacrosse Falls 10-8 at No. 5 Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Trailing 10-4 with 13:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Brown women's lacrosse team (4-4, 1-1) cut No. 5 Yale's (8-1, 2-0) lead to 10-8 with 20 seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough as Yale held on for the win.
Adele Atherton led the way offensively for the Bears with two goals and two assists, Tessie Batchelder found the back of the net twice while dishing out one assist. Mackenzie Farley scored one goal and tallied a team-high five draw controls.
Kiki Tormey, Caroline Nozzolillo, and Claire Murphy all scored for Brown, Annie Dignazio earned three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
After Nozzolillo opened the scoring, Yale responded with two-straight goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter. The Bears won all four draw controls in the opening 15 minutes as Dignazio and Farley each had two. Each side mustered eight total shots to go along with three on net, Mackenzie Conway made two first quarter saves.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-1 win three-straight goals to open the second quarter. Tormey ended the Yale run with a goal before Yale added another goal to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. The Bears won seven out of nine first half draw controls as Dignazio and Farley combined for six, Conway stopped three shots in the opening 30 minutes.
The Bulldogs extended its lead to 7-2 with a goal to open the second half, the Bears responded with a 2-0 spurt behind goals from Batchelder and Farley. The two goals cut the deficit to 7-4 before the Bulldogs added one more goal with 48 seconds remaining to take an 8-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
Yale extended its lead to 10-4 with two goals 1:52 into the fourth quarter before Brown began its comeback bid. Batchelder opened the run with a goal before Atherton scored back-to-back goals. After Atherton's goals, Murphy found the back of the net with 20 seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough as Yale held on for the victory.
Brown will continue Ivy League play on Saturday, Mar. 28 when it travels to Harvard, the opening draw control is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Jordan Field. Fans can purchase tickets here.
