PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (5-11) swept its home opening doubleheader against Stonehill (1-19), winning game one 6-5 and game two 9-1 in five innings.
Maggie Foxx shined at the plate for Brown, finishing the afternoon with three hits, including two home runs, and six RBI. Elli Thompson also had three hits on the day and drove in four runs with a double and a triple.
In the circle, Macy Borowski and Edie Cobb each picked up complete game victories.
GAME 1: Brown 6, Stonehill 5
Foxx led the Bears, driving in five runs and Borowski held on for the complete game win as the Bears beat Stonehill in game one of the doubleheader, 6-5.
Foxx and Borowski both collected two hits in the game with Foxx driving in five runs. Borowski earned the win in the circle throwing seven innings and striking out eight batters.
After a run by Stonehill in the top of the first, Brown responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the inning. A one-out walk drawn by Jasmine Hsiao started the offense. Elli Thompson then doubled to the wall in left center to score Hsiao. After a four-pitch walk to Borowski, Foxx crushed the second pitch of her at bat over the center field fence for her first-career home run to put the Bears up 4-1.
Stonehill added a run in the third but Foxx again came up big for the Bears. With one out, Thompson walked and Borowski doubled to right center to put runners on second and third and Torii Ramirez entered to run for Borowski. Foxx stepped to the plate and singled on a 2-2 count to center field, scoring both runners and making it 6-2.
The game got tight late as Stonehill scored two runs in the fifth, making it 6-4. In the sixth, three-straight singles with one out made it 6-5 Brown and a hit batter loaded the bases again. A line drive to right field was not deep enough for a sacrifice fly and with two outs a fly ball to the wall in left was tracked down by Hsiao to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
Borowski would then put down Stonehill in order in the seventh to close out the win.
GAME 2: Brown 9, Stonehill 1 (5 innings)
The Bears clubbed eight hits as Cobb allowed just two in a five-inning win over the Skyhawks to close the day.
Thompson led the offense with three RBI and Amanda Deng and Abby Bettencourt each drove in two.
Cobb worked around walks, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out seven batters.
The scoring began in the second for the Bears as Foxx led of the inning with a walk and scored on a triple by Deng two batters later. A safety squeeze was executed perfectly by Alyssa Villarde to score Deng and Brown was up 2-0 after two.
Stonehill scored its lone run on the third on a wild pitch but the Bears broke open the game in the fourth. Foxx led off the inning with a solo home run and Zytkewicz Ray followed with a double. A single by Deng scored Zytkewicz Ray and Brown led 4-1.
After a walk to Villarde, a sac bunt and ground out but two outs on the board. Hsiao walked to load the bases before Thompson tripled over the center fielder's head to the wall to scored three, making it 7-4.
In the fifth, the Bears had runners on first and second with two outs after a single by Zytkewicz Ray and walk by Deng. Lilly Burns lined out but Abby Bettencourt delivered a triple to the wall in right center field with two outs to score two runs for the walk-off win.
