Wrestling Defeats Sacred Heart on Senior Day, 22-18

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown wrestling (5-8, 0-4) defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers (3-9, 0-4) at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday afternoon, winning their Senior Day dual by a final score of 22-18. The Bears honored seniors Drew Clearie, Alex Semenenko, Ian Oswalt, and Nick Olivieri.
"We showed some maturity today, winning the tight ones and staying aggressive from whistle to whistle,"Â Marvin Wilenzik '56 Head Coaching Chair for Brown Wrestling Jordan Leen said. "It was great to honor our seniors and see so many alums back in the building. It was a fun dual meet, coming down to the last match with Sem getting the fall was only fitting."Â
After falling down 12-0, NA/No. 32 Khimari Manns (141) delivered Brown's first win of the afternoon against John Hildebrandt that went down to the wire. Tied at 1-1 with less than 20 seconds remaining, Manns scored a takedown of Hildebrandt to earn a 4-1 decision as time expired.Â
NA/No. 29 Austin McBurney (149) followed Manns by earning a victory over Dakota Asuncion via decision, 7-3. With the win, McBurney moved to 8-5 in dual meets this season and 19-11 overall. Â
Max Norman (165) scored a decisive 15-2 major decision against AJ Falcone, bringing the Bears to within five of the Pioneers, 15-10. Norman moved to 20-13 on the season with the win, leading all Bruno freshmen in victories.Â
Clearie (174) found himself in a hotly contested bout against Aidan Zarrella, finding a way to prevail via sudden victory decision, 4-1. Clearie has now won several matches in a row against Columbia (Feb. 15), Hofstra (Feb. 15), and Sacred Heart. With the victory, the Bears closed the gap on the Pioneers lead, 15-13.
No. 19/No. 15 Andrew Reall (197) picked up his 31st win of the season after earning an 11-4 decision over Chris DeLena. Real also improved to 12-1 in dual competition with the win, leading the Bears in dual victories this season.Â
With the Bears trailing 18-16 heading into the final match of the day, senior sensation No. 24/No. 14 Semenenko (285) did what he does best, pinning Brendan Gilchrist in 5:26 to secure the 22-18 victory for the Bears on Senior Day. The pinfall is the 10th of the season for Semenenko, who remains in the top 10 in NCAA DI for pinfalls and second overall in NCAA DI for pinfalls by a heavyweight. Semenenko also improved to 11-2 in dual competition this season with the win.Â
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., as they host the Harvard Crimson in the final Ivy League dual of the season.Â
