HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Brown wrestling (4-8, 0-4 Ivy) split its dual matches on Sunday, falling to Columbia (10-3, 5-0 Ivy) 28-10 before a 22-17 victory at Hofstra (3-14).
"We had some strong performances today and we had some that we need to learn from and be better moving forward. That's not always connected to winning and losing,"Â Marvin Wilenzik '56 Head Coaching Chair for Brown Wrestling Jordan Leen said. "Khimari Manns for example beat a top twenty guy against Columbia and didn't finish the match right away. He then eded up on the bad side of things in a match where he put together a more complete performance."
"The wins and losses may not be in our control, but the way we compete is completely up to us. We need to compete the right way regardless of th circumstances if we want to be at our best down the homestretch."Â
The day began with the Bears taking on the Lions, and No. 32 Khimari Manns (141) picked up the first victory of the afternoon for Brown in a 13-11 decision over No. 17 Lorenzo Frezza. In the seventh match of competition, Drew Clearie (174) earned his fourth dual meet win of the season with a 13-3 major decision over Oliver Howard.Â
No. 15 Andrew Reall (197) picked up Bruno's final victory over the Lions by earning a 4-1 sudden victory decision against No. 27 Jack Wehmeyer. This win moves Reall to 4-4 this season against ranked opponents.Â
With the heavyweights starting the action against Hofstra, No. 14 Alex Semenenko (285) won the first match of the dual by defeating Adrian Sans via tech fall, 18-3 (7:00). After losing the next several matches, the Bears rallied by winning five of their final six matches.
No. 29 Austin McBurney (149) defeated Alex Turley via major decision, 13-3. Ethan Mojena (157) followed with a 5-1 decision against Frank Volpe, securing another three points for Brown.
Clearie was one of two wrestlers for the Bears to go 2-0 on the day, winning a close match against Matt Waddell by decision, 12-11. Connor O'Donnell (184) also picked up a win via decision, beating Josh Jorgge by a final score of 12-8. O'Donnell's win earned Brown another three points, putting them in the lead by a score of 18-17.
With the outcome of the dual hanging in the balance, the Bears sent Reall to the mat with a chance to secure the victory. The standout sophomore from North Scituate, Rhode Island didn't disappoint, earning a 17-5 major decision over Will Conlon, sending the Bears back to Providence with a win. Reall joined his teammate Clearie in a 2-0 Sunday performance.
Wrestling heads home for the final two dual meets of the season next weekend, when Sacred Heart and Harvard come to town on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22 for Senior/Alumni Night and Beat the Streets at the Pizzitola Sports Center.Â
