
Men's Lacrosse Opens 2026 Season at Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (0-0, 0-0 Ivy League) open the season with a trip to Connecticut to take on the (RV) Fairfield Stags (1-0, 0-0 CAA) Saturday afternoon at Rafferty Stadium.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Brown enters the 2026 season under second-year head coach Jon Torpey. The Bears finished the 2025 season with a 3-10 overall record with wins over Bryant, Providence College, and Fairfield.
- Marcus Wertheim returns for his senior season after leading the team with 29 points in 2025. Jeremy Hopsicker, Ben Scandone, and Brady O'Kane also return in 2026 as the quartet represents four of the five leading scorers from a season ago.
- Defensively, goalie Connor Foley, All-American Charlie Cave, and Trey Taylor headline the returners. Foley posted a .554 save percentage and an 11.00 goals against average in 12 games in 2025.
- Brown's roster features several familiar faces with 36 returners from the 2025 squad as well as 15 newcomers.
- Brown's man-up offense tallied eight goals in 29 attempts in 2025. The man-down defense ranked fifth in the Ivy League at .600 (24-40) a season ago.
- Henry Brayer is the leading faceoff returner. He finished 2025 with a .421 percentage (16-for-38) along with four ground balls.
- Fairfield enters Saturday with a 1-0 overall record after taking a double-overtime 14-13 win over Lehigh last Friday (Feb. 6).
- Will Consoli led the Stags offensively with three goals and an assist. Three others - Devin Lampron, KJ Delane, and Luke Patchen - all chipped in two goals.
- In 2025, Fairfield posted a 12-3 record and 5-2 CAA mark, ultimately falling to Drexel in the CAA semifinal.
- Devin Lampron led the Stags offensively in 2025 with 30 goals and was second on the team with 37 points. Keegan Lynch, now a junior, led the team with 26 assists and 49 points.
- Goalie Owen Hirsch returns in 2026 after starting all 15 games a season ago. Hirsh finished the 2025 campaign with a 9.32 goals against average and a .514 save percentage. He recorded 14 saves in the 2026 opening win over Lehigh.
- Fairfield's defense ranked 11th nationally in 2025 with 9.27 goals against per game. Julian Radossich returns as a junior after picking up CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2025. He was named to the 2026 Tewaaraton Award Watch List.
- Fairfield's man-up offense clicked at .375 (9-24) a season ago to rank fourth in the CAA and 28th nationally. The man-down defense led the CAA and ranked 11th nationally at .750 (39-52).
- Daniel Davis returns in 2026 after taking the bulk of the faceoffs in 2025. He finished the 2025 campaign 106-for-192 (.552). He ranked 28th nationally with his faceoff percentage in 2025.
- Saturday marks the 11th meeting between Brown and Fairfield in a series dating back to 1996. Brown holds a 7-3 record against the Stags.
- Brown won the first six meetings from 1996-2001 before Fairfield picked up the wins in 2002 and 2003.
- The Bears beat Fairfield in 2004 before a 21-year hiatus to last year's opener, an 11-5 Fairfield win.
- Senior captain Charlie Cave picked up two preseason honors.
- Cave was named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American by both Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse.
- It marks the second straight season Cave has earned preseason recognition from USA Lacrosse.
- The Arlington, Massachusetts native was named Second Team All-Ivy and an Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American following the 2025 season.
- In 2024, he earned First Team All-Ivy recognition.
- Brown captured its first Ocean State Cup since 2022 and eighth in program history with wins over Providence College and Bryant in 2025.
- The Bears will look to hoist the in-state rivalry cup for the ninth time in 2026.
- Brown takes on Providence College on the road next Saturday (Feb. 21) before hosting the Bulldogs on Saturday, February 28.
- Brown won the Cup in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2025.
- Bryant has won six Ocean State Cups with the most recent in 2024. PC has won the Cup twice, most recently in 2020.
- Brown is receiving votes in the most recent USILA Coaches Poll.
- Nine of Brown's opponents in 2026 are ranked of receiving votes in the USILA poll.
- Within the Ivy League: #3 Princeton, #4 Cornell, #12 Harvard, (RV) Yale, and (RV) Dartmouth.
- Among the non-conference opponents: #8 North Carolina, (RV) Fairfield, (RV) Providence College, and (RV) UMass.
- Marcus Wertheim represented Australia at the 2025 World Lacrosse Super Sixes Championship last fall.
- Wertheim led the Australians to a fourth-place finish in the tournament and led all scorers with 25 goals and five assists.
- Wertheim finished the Championship with five hat tricks in six games.
- Freshman Sawyer English was selected to the Canada Under-20 National team for the 2025 U20 Championships, held in South Korea last summer.
- English tallied two goals in the Championships and helped Canada beat the United States for the gold medal.
- Marcus Wertheim enters the 2026 season with 66 career points, 34 shy of 100 on his career.
- Charlie Cave enters the 2026 season with 51 career caused turnovers. He is 14 shy of matching Alec Tulett '16 for second in program history.
- Cave also enters the 2026 season with 93 career ground balls, seven shy of reaching the century mark.
- 36 Bears return from the 2025 squad along with 15 newcomers added to the Class of 2029.
- From the 2025 roster, Brown returns 61.5% of its scoring and 62.3% of its point production.
- The Bears also return over 60% of its ground ball production and over 68% of its caused turnover production from a season ago.
