NEW YORK, N.Y. - Brown wrestling (3-7, 0-3 Ivy) heads to New York for the fourth time this season as the Bears are set to face Columbia (8-3, 3-0 Ivy) and Hofstra (3-12, 3-5 EIWA) on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
The Bears have four starters ranked in the first RPI, released on Feb. 12, led by No. 14 Alex Semenenko (285) and No. 15 Andrew Reall (197), who have had outstanding seasons. Both wrestlers are 9-1 in dual matches so far, and each has won over 80% of their total matches this season, with Semenenko at 21-5 and Reall at 28-4. The national rankings also include No. 29 Austin McBurney (149) and No. 32 Khimari Manns (141).Â
The Lions received 16 votes and narrowly missed a spot in the top 25 of the Feb. 9 edition of the NWCA Coaches Poll. All of their starters are nationally ranked in the first RPI, while the Pride enters the weekend with a 3-5 record in EIWA contests.Â
The heavyweight match between Semenenko and Columbia's No. 16 Vincent Mueller will feature two of the best pinfall specialists in the country going head-to-head. Semenenko is tied for third nationally with nine falls, while Mueller is ranked first with 11Â pinfalls this season. Reall aims to reach the .500 mark in ranked matches this season, holding a 3-4 record overall before his showdown with No. 27 Jack Wehmeyer.
Sunday's Columbia dual features several other nationally ranked matchups, including No. 32 Manns facing No. 17 Lorenzo Frezza and No. 29 McBurney (149) scheduled to compete against No. 22 Richard Fedalen.
Freshman standout Manns, who finds himself nationally ranked for the first time this season, and McBurney are each looking for their first ranked wins of the season this weekend. Â
Ethan Mojena (157) is set to face No. 12 Kai Owen, and Max Norman (165) will be facing No. 20 Cesar Alvan. Norman, who has been one of the top freshmen in this year's recruiting class for Marvin Wilenzik '56 Head Coaching Chair for Brown Wrestling Jordan Leen, has a 3-5 record against ranked wrestlers entering this weekend. In addition to his matchup with Alvan, there is a possibility that Norman faces No. 26 Jake Slotnick for Hofstra. The only other wrestler for the Bears who will face two ranked opponents on Sunday is Douglas Shipers (133), who faces No. 26 Evin Gursoy (Columbia) and No. 27 Gauge Shipp (Hofstra).Â
