PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Trailing by 1.525 points heading into the final rotation, the Brown gymnastics team's furious late comeback fell just short in a 193.000-192.875 loss to Southern Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon in the Rumble & Tumble at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The event was a dual gymnastics meet side-by-side with a Brown wrestling meet vs. Princeton.
The Bears were led by the rookies, with freshman Lulu Ton-That winning on both vault (tie) and bars. Freshman Rehna Saalinger won on beam, while senior Sophia Dewar tied for first on vault and tied for second on floor.
Brown started off the meet with a 48.000 on vault, led by Ton-That and Dewar, who rounded out the rotation by tying for first place overall with scores of 9.725.
On bars, the Bears posted a 47.375, led by Ton-That who picked up the win with a 9.675, tying her career-high. Freshman Sophia Tressler followed in a tie for second place at 9.650, and sophomore Addy Whiteside placed sixth by tying her career-high at 9.600.
Next on beam, Saalinger led Brown with a 9.775 to take first place. Junior Emily Ford followed in third place at 9.725 and senior Liza Marcus scored 9.700 to finish fifth. As a team, Brown scored 48.425 on beam.
The Bears roared back furiously and briefly retook the lead during the final rotation before ultimately coming up short. Brown's floor score of 49.075 is tied for the 11th best floor score in program history. Four of Brown's six gymnasts either tied or set new career-highs with Whiteside, Marcus and Dewar all tying for second overall at 9.875. Sophomore Daisy Fallon set a new career-high at 9.775 to place sixth.
The Bears will return to action next Sunday, February 8 with a tri-meet at Springfield College against Springfield and Rhode Island College. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
