Men's Hockey's Comeback Bid Comes Up Short Against Clarkson
1/9/2026 10:28:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-13-0, 2-7-0 ECAC) scored two goals early in the third period to pull within one, but were unable to complete the comeback as the Clarkson Golden Knights (10-11-0, 4-5-0 ECAC) held on for a 3-2 conference win Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I'm disappointed all the way around. We played well in one period – where's that energy, intensity, and urgency for the first two periods?" the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We'll win a lot of hockey games if we just play the first two periods like we did the third. We need the guys to understand the effort, energy, and urgency that goes into every game we play. That was a huge hockey game to turn around our ECAC season, and to get the effort we got for two periods is incredibly disheartening.
"The guys have to understand what it takes to win a hockey game, and until we figure that out – all 21 guys that are playing – it's going to be hard. I told the guys that they better have urgency, intensity, pride, and passion for Brown. They're at the best school in the world.
"They need to play the right way every time they step on the ice for the name on the front. I did, my teams did, teams I've coached prior have. We need that."
Brown and Clarkson skated through a scoreless first period with chances at both ends of the ice. Brown killed off the lone power play chance of the frame late in the period as Fred Halyk (33 saves) tallied 17 first period stops.
Ryan Bottrill broke the deadlock on the power play 7:09 into the second period with assists credited to Jared Mangan and Owen Van Steensel.
Clarkson doubled the lead with a second power play goal four minutes later as Tate Taylor found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Ty Brassington and Remi Gelinas added the assists.
Brassington pushed the Golden Knight lead to 3-0 with 4:49 remaining in the middle frame off a rush with Bottrill and Luka Sukovic assisting.
Ben Poitras got the Bears on the board 3:01 into the third period with his fourth goal of the season. Ryan St. Louis and Poitras entered the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 rush and St. Louis found Poitras on the backdoor for the goal. Andrew King set up the rush with a feed to St. Louis.
King tallied his fourth goal of the season three minutes later. The sophomore deflected a point shot past Clarkson goaltender Shane Soderwall (22 saves). Alex Pineau added the secondary assist.
The Bears pressed offensively looking for the equalizer but were unable to find a power play goal late in the period and during nearly three minutes of extra attacker time.
