Women's Soccer Drops First Ivy Contest 2-1 to Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Brown women's soccer team (7-2-2, 1-1-0 Ivy) dropped their conference match 2-1 to the Columbia Lions (4-4-2, 2-0-0 Ivy) on Saturday night.
"We didn't show up in the first half, and when you only play 45 minutes of a 90-minute game, it's tough to get a result, especially against good teams," Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill said. "Columbia caught us on two counter-attacks and took care of minimal chances they had in the game. We didn't execute the things we know are our strengths, and that's on us. At this level, you can't afford to ease into games. That said, it's been a demanding stretch with a lot of competitive matches, so we need to make sure we use the next couple of days for rest and recovery and then get back to training. We'll use it to reset, get our legs back, and make sure we're ready to go from the first whistle next time."
The Lions got on the board first, scoring in the 40th minute when Maia Tabion was able to send the ball to the bottom left of the net. The Bears retaliated in the 57th minute of the match when sophomore defender Kyra Treanor headed the ball past Columbia's goalkeeper, off a free kick opportunity from sophomore midfielder Brooke Birtwistle.
Columbia capped off scoring in the 85th minute of the match when Gabby Chan was able to capitalize on an opportunity, extending their lead 2-1.
The Bears rounded out the match with nine shots to Columbia's five.
Brown will return home for an Ivy League match on Saturday, October 4, against the Penn Quakers. It will be the Pink Out game at Stevenson-Pincince Field with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
