LUBBOCK, Texas. – Brown softball's (33-17) season came to a close with a 13-5 loss in six innings to Washington (35-18) in the Lubbock Regional of the NCAA Tournament at Rocky Johnson Field on Friday (May 16).
Brown's five runs are the most the Bears have scored in their four NCAA Tournament games in program history. The Bears finished the game with seven hits from seven different batters on the day.
Washington jumped on top early, taking advantage of two Brown errors with six runs in the first inning, including a two-out grand slam. The Huskies scored two more runs in the second on a two-out double after another error, making all eight runs in the first two innings unearned.
Brown got the offense going in the third beginning with a single by Villarde down the left field line. Leah Carey drew a walk before Hsiao took a 3-2 pitch over the foul pole down the left field line to a three-run home run.
The Bears kept things going with a single by Elli Thompson to left and Laurel Moody followed with a single to right, moving Thompson to third. Washington made a pitching change but Cameron Zytkewicz Ray responded with a single to right to score Thompson and make it 8-4. After a fielder's choice threw out a runner at third, Guevara helped herself with a chopper up the middle, scoring Zytkewicz Ray and making it 8-5.
Washington extended their lead with solo home runs to lead off both the fourth and fifth innings.
Senior Alexis Guevara exited the game for the final time having thrown four innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three batters.
Edie Cobb replaced Guevara, throwing 1.2 innings but allowed three runs with two outs in the bottom of the six to close out the game.
