Baseball Falls in Extra Innings to Harvard in Series Opener
4/25/2025 6:49:00β―PM | Baseball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. β Three unearned runs in the 10th inning for Harvard helped the Crimson top Brown baseball by a final score of 7-4 on Friday afternoon.
Β
Brown starter Santhosh Gottam was solid through his 5.2 innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts, throwing 50 of his 69 pitches for strikes. Junior Mika Petersen had three hits and an RBI, junior DJ Dillehay had two hits and two RBIs including a solo home run, and freshman Christian Butera had a huge game-tying RBI single in the eighth inning.
Β
After a quick seven-pitch top of the first by Gottam, the Bears jumped on the board in the bottom of the inning with Gunner Boree leading off with a walk, stealing second, and coming in on a two-out single to left field by Dillehay.
Β
The Crimson tied the score with one out in the second inning with hits on consecutive pitches, including a triple and RBI single to right field.
Β
The Bears retook the lead with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Nathan Brasher lined a single to right field, then scored all the way from first on a double off the center field wall by Petersen to spot Brown the 2-1 lead.
Β
Harvard once again answered quickly with an unearned run to tie to score in the sixth. A one-out throwing error, a walk and a single loaded the bases for the Crimson before a bases loaded walk with two outs forced in the tying run.
Β
Harvard took their first lead with one out in the sixth on a walk, single and two-run double to build a 4-2 lead. Peter Dubie then came in out of the bullpen to strikeout the first two batters he faced to get the Bears out of the inning.
Β
Brown rallied to tie the score in the eighth inning, starting with a one-out homer to deep left-center field by Dillehay. Brandon Chang got on via a hit-by-pitch, stole second and later scored on a huge two-out single through the left side by Butera to tie the game 4-4.
Β
The score remained tied into the 10th when the Crimson plated a trio of unearned runs, with the key plays being a throwing error on a sac bunt that scored a runner all the way from first, and a clutch two-run single by Jack Rickheim who lined one into left field on the 11th pitch of his at bat.
Β
Petersen led off the 10th for Brown with a single, but a double play helped thwart the Bear's rally.
Β
The Bears and the Crimson will wrap up their three-game weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
