Alexis Guevara Sets Program Strikeout Record in Win at Central Connecticut

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Brown softball's Alexis Guevara became the program's all-time strikeout leader and set the program's single season strikeout mark in a career performance as Brown (25-13) split its doubleheader at Central Connecticut State (18-26) on Wednesday (April 23).
The Bears picked up a 1-0 win the first game before falling 9-0 in the second game in five innings.
GAME 1: Brown 1, Central Connecticut State 0
Behind a career performance by Alexis Guevara, Brown started the day with a 1-0 win over Central Connecticut State. Guevara threw a complete game shutout with a career-high 14 strikeouts for her 13th win of the season. In the process, Guevara broke the Brown program record for strikeouts in a career with 327 and set the Brown single season strikeout record with 128 on the year.
Guevara retired the first nine batters of the game, including six strikeouts, before surrendering her first hit in the top of the fourth Back-to-back strikeouts plus a groundout left the runner stranded at second. Guevara then set down the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, with two strikeouts in each.
Brown, which finished with just four hits, got the one hit it needed in the top of the sixth. After Kaicee Klus walked to start the inning, Laurel Moody flew out but an error on the throw back to first allowed Klus to take second. Two batters later, a double by Cameron Zytkewicz Ray to right center scored Klus for the only run of the game.
Guevara made it interesting in the seventh after a single and an error put runners on first and second with no outs. Guevara got a strikeout before a walk loaded the bases. On a ground ball in the next at bat, Zytkewicz Ray went home to get the out. Guevara then struck out the next batter to leave the bases loaded and give Brown the win.
GAME 2: Central Connecticut State 9, Brown 0 – 5 innings
The Bears were shutout in the second game of the doubleheader, falling 9-0 in five innings to close out the day.
Lilly Burns finished with the lone hit for Brown as the Bears were not able to get a player into scoring position in the contest.
Edie Cobb (2-2) picked up the loss, allowing five runs in 1.1 innings. Annie Finch gave up three earned runs in relief. The two combined for three strikeouts on the afternoon.

Brown will host Yale in an Ivy League series with the three game set scheduled to begin on Saturday (April 26).
