Comeback Bid Comes Up Short for No. 17 Women’s Lacrosse at No. 11 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - Trailing 14-9 with 5:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, the No. 17 Brown women's lacrosse team (7-3, 1-2) cut No. 11 Duke's (10-3, 4-2) lead to 14-13 with 2:29 remaining, but it wasn't enough as Duke held on for the 14-13 win.
After Duke opened the scoring early in the first quarter, Carly Camphausen scored two consecutive goals to give Brown a 2-1 advantage. The Blue Devils tied the game at two with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter as the two sides went to the second quarter knotted at two.
The Bears opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run on goals from Leah Caputo, Kiki Tormey, and Avery Doran. Doran's goal gave the Bears a 5-2 lead with 7:51 remaining in the half, the Blue Devils closed the half on a 2-0 run as Brown took a 5-4 advantage into halftime. The reigning back-to-back Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Claire Mahoney stopped five shots in the opening half.
Duke continued its run to open the second half with five consecutive goals, giving them a 10-5 advantage with 5:59 remaining in the quarter. Brown bounced back with four of the next five goals to close the quarter as Doran scored twice during the run. Beth Anderson found the back of the net with three seconds remaining in the third to cut Duke's lead to 11-9 heading to the fourth quarter.
After Duke extended its lead to 14-9, Brown began its comeback attempt. Greta Criqui scored two goals in 52 seconds before Maddie Joyce and Syndey Rathjen added goals, Rathjen's goal cut the Duke lead to 14-13. All three goals came in less than a three-minute span.
The Bears had a chance to tie the game after causing a turnover with one minute remaining to gain possession but they were unable to get a shot off as Duke held on for the victory.
Doran led the Bears offensively with three goals and two assists as Criqui, Camphausen, and Caputo chipped in with two goals each. Mahoney stopped seven shots while grabbing four ground balls, Riley Peterson and Codi Johnson each had a team-high four draw controls.
Brown will continue Ivy League play when they welcome Columbia to Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 3:30 p.m. Following the conclusion of the game, Brown will honor its nine seniors.
