Hopsicker's Hat Trick Lifts Men's Lacrosse to Win at #16 UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The Brown Bears (3-5, 0-1 Ivy League) tallied the game's final three goals, including Jeremy Hopsicker's game-winner with eight seconds remaining, to stun the 16th-ranked UMass Minutemen (7-2, 0-0 A10) Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
"It was an incredibly strong effort from our guys today," said head coach Jon Torpey. "The staff put together a great plan and our guys executed. We battled some injuries this week and it was great to see so many guys step in and step up.
"UMass is an incredibly well-coached team, and Garber Field is as tough of a place to play as any D1. It was great to see our young men gut one out."
After a scoreless start to the game, Brady O'Kane tallied the afternoon's first goal with 3:31 remaining in the opening frame.
The Minutemen tied the game with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Wells Bligh scored just before the quarter ended to give Brown a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
Dash Sachs doubled Brown's lead five seconds into the second quarter with his first goal of the season off the faceoff.
UMass responded with three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead before Marcus Wertheim ended the run halfway through the second quarter to even the score.
Hopsicker made it 5-4 Bears with his first goal of the game before the Minutemen tallied the final two goals of the half to take a 6-5 lead into the break.
Robbie Granara tallied the lone goal of the third quarter to extend the UMass lead to two, 7-5, heading into the fourth quarter.
Wertheim tallied his second of the game with 8:59 remaining in the fourth to bring the Bears within a goal.
With 6:03 remaining, Hopsicker struck for his second of the afternoon with a man-up goal to level the score at 7-7.
UMass went a man-up with less than 1:30 remaining in the fourth, but the Bears were able to get the stop with Connor Foley stopping his 13th shot of the game and call timeout as the penalty expired in the final seconds of the game.
On the restart, Hopsicker scooped the loose ball in front of the net and flipped a shot past UMass goalie Owen Salanger (16 saves) for the game-winner with eight seconds remaining.
