NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale Bulldogs (2-5, 1-2 Ivy League) held off the Brown Bears (3-6, 0-2 Ivy League) for a conference win Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Jeremy Hopsicker recorded his third consecutive hat trick to lead the team in goals. Aidan McLane returned to the lineup and added two goals and two assists. Wells Bligh recorded his fifth career multi-point game with a two-goal effort.
"I honestly feel like in certain points of the game today we played our best lacrosse of the year, but it wasn't a consistent effort for 60 minutes," said head coach Jon Torpey. "We gave their offense way too many clean, uncontested opportunities and you can't do that against a strong program like Yale.
"We pride ourselves on winning all three phases of the game defense, offense, and the middle third. Today our middle third presence, and in particular offense-to-defense was not a strength. We have a lot to clean up this week with #1 Cornell coming to Providence. I look forward to seeing our guys respond."
Ben Scandone opened the game with an assist on Hopsicker's first of the game before recording his fifth goal of the season to give Brown a 2-0 lead with 10:42 remaining in the first quarter.
McLane recorded his 14th goal of the season halfway through the first quarter. His goal was sandwiched between Yale goals from Leo Johnson and David Anderson to give the Bears a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Johnson added his second goal and third point of the game with 12:18 remaining in the second quarter to even the score at 3-3. Wells Bligh and Anderson traded goals within a minute to push the score to 4-4 with 11:05 remaining in the frame.
Cole Cashion broke the deadlock with 10:13 remaining to give Yale its first lead of the game and added his second straight goal 30 seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead.
McLane ended the mini-Yale run with his second of the game off a great pass from Brady O'Kane with 5:21 remaining in the quarter. Yale regained a two-goal lead as Carson Kuhl found the back of the net with 4:10 on the clock.
Hopsicker added his second of the game in the final second of the second quarter. The junior ripped a shot from just inside midfield off a restart to beat Yale goalie Hugh Conrad (12 saves).
Dash Sachs tallied his second goal in as many games to open the second half and bring the Bears back even with the Bulldogs at 7-7. The Bulldogs responded with a pair of goals in 20 seconds from Brad Sharp and Anderson, respectively, to extend the lead to two at 9-7.
Hopsicker answered with 12:59 remaining and Luke Dellicicchi found the back of the net for his third of the season with 10:56 remaining to draw back even.
Cashion finished off the hat trick with a man-down goal with 9:24 remaining in the third and Johnson finished off the hat trick with 8:07 remaining to push the Yale lead to 11-9.
After hitting three consecutive posts, Chris Lyons finally found the back of the net to give Yale its biggest lead of the game, 12-9, with 6:02 remaining in the third. Anderson tallied his fourth goal of the game with 3:34 remaining in the third to push Yale's lead to four.
Bligh added his second of the game with 2:28 remaining in the third to bring the Bears back within three.
The Bulldogs extended the lead back to four in the final second of the third quarter as Max Krevsky recorded his first of the game.
In the fourth quarter, Anderson added his fifth of the game before Spencer Hughes found the back of the net for his first of the game early in the frame. Ryan Behrens tallied his first of the season with 1:20 remaining to bring the final score to 15-12.
