PROVIDENCE, R.I. - As the 2025 season opener rapidly approaches, it's time to take a look at Brown's first opponent of the year.
Boston University enters competition after a tenth place finish at the 2024 IRA Championships.Â
The Terriers are led by Thomas Bohrer, who is entering his 17th season as the program's head coach. Bohrer, a 2010 National Rowing Hall of Fame inductee, has a 59-38 (.602) all-time cup record at Boston University.
"The Michalson Cup historically has been a terrific dual race to kick off the Spring season for both Brown and Boston University. Fielding the full squads, both teams will have a flat out test over the full 2000m course early on in the year," said assistant coach Scott Cockle.Â
"The Charles River Basin always provides challenging windy conditions for the rowers to perform, this paired up with BU's international squad depth and top end speed will make this dual race a formidable opener for us. Sticking to our race plan and executing the rightly timed moves will play a vital role in how these races pan out."
The Terriers return a 2024 Empacher-IRCA All-American in Jan Koska, who enters his sophomore campaign with BU. Tucker Thomas returns to the program after being named IRCA Comeback Athlete of the Year in 2024. BU returns five 2024 IRCA Scholar Athletes: Nicolo Bizzoozero, Ian Doud, Andrea Garbo, Hannah Noguchi, and Tucker Thomas.Â
With this in mind, the Bears have been locked in for their opening race. "The preparation has been good. The whole squad has been working hard from top to bottom," said Davis Kelly. "Everyone's excited to have the opportunity to express themselves on the race course this weekend."Â
