PRINCETON, N.J. - No. 6 Brown Men's Crew raced for the Content Cup today on Lake Carnegie against the No. 3 Princeton Tigers on Saturday. After a spirited contest against two of the top crews in the nation, the Tigers were able to retain the Cup and move to 17-14 all-time in the series.Â
"The race against Princeton was our final test of the regular season before the championship," Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 said. "We had good energy and all the crews fought hard. That said, the work continues. We can execute better, the athletes can be sharper and we can get more out of each stroke."
"The standard is very high. We welcome the challenge and the task at hand. As coaches, our task is to identify the limiting factors and make the necessary adjustments. It's important that we give the athletes clear targets. Every practice matters. This group is highly motivated and ready to take on the final stages of the season."Â
The weather for today's regatta was overcast with a temperature in the low fifties and some headwind coming from the North, making for a flat racecourse for both programs.Â
The Varsity Eight, coxed by Elenna Seguin and stroked by David Person, got off to a strong, clean start. The Bears were sitting around 36.5 to 37 strokes per minute throughout the first 750 meters and made a push around the middle 500 meters to keep things close. Ultimately, Brown's late push was nullified by the Tigers, as the Bears came in second with a final time of 05:51.8. This proved to be the closest race of the morning for Brown, with a gap of 3.2 seconds separating them from the Tigers.Â
The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Dom Valt, got out to a solid start through the first 250 meters. Princeton came out of the gates strong, leading by nearly a boat length through the first 750 meters. The Bears fought hard to keep some overlap of a few inches between the two crews, setting into their base rhythm at about 36 strokes per minute. The final 500 meters saw Princeton pull away for the win, with Bruno posting a final time of 05:55.9.
The Third Varsity, coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdett, began the race with strong starts by both crews. The Tigers built up a lead of about a boat length through the first 1,000 meters. The Bears made their patented Bruno Twenty push during the third 500 meters, closing the gap between the two boats. Princeton was able to keep a steady pace and win the race, with Brown finishing in second place with a final time of 06:01.2.
The Fourth Varsity, coxed by Adelaide Poulson and stroked by Samuel Loehnis, settled into their base rhythm through the first 250 meters, a few spots behind the Princeton 4V. As the race progressed, Brown fought for second place with the Princeton 5V. While keeping a steady pace throughout, Bruno ultimately finished in third place with a time of 06:19.2.Â
The Bears will head back to Providence with an eye towards the Eastern Sprints on May 17 at Lake Quinsigamond. This regatta also represents the Ivy Championship.Â
