PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Bears head back home after a pair of dual competitions on Sunday against Princeton and Penn.
Brown dropped the first dual competition of the day by a final score of 36-7 against Princeton. Some of the bright spots for the Bears were Blake Saito (157) and Drew Clearie (174), who each picked up victories against Jacob Mann (Princeton) and Xavier Giles (Princeton).
Against Penn later in the evening, the Bears saw victories by Keegan Rothrock (165) and Thomas Sandoval (197) against Andy Troczynski (Penn) and Nate Taylor (Penn), but ultimately lost the competition by a final score of 37-6.
One standout performance for Brown came in a loss when Drew Reall (184) forced double overtime against #21 ranked Max Hale (Penn). Reall, who is currently ranked #27 for his weight class by FloWrestling, has shown the ability to compete with anybody in the country this season and finds himself in a position to finish the year strong as we approach the stretch run of the schedule.
On the injury front, both Jacob Joyce (133) and Blake Saito (157) suffered injuries on Sunday. Joyce, who is 12-3 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in dual competition, injured his head before weighing in. Due to the timing of the injury, the Bears didn't have replacements with the team in order to take the vacated spot and had to forfeit both matches at the 133 weight class.
Blake Saito is dealing with a lower body injury that forced him to leave his match against #16 ranked Jude Swisher (Penn) in the second half of dual competition. Saito, who is ranked #33 in the country for his weight class by FloWrestling, is 9-2 on the season with a 4-2 record in dual competitions that he completed. Coach Leen said he expects both wrestlers to return to the lineup at some point this season, with the exact date to be determined.
"There were some bright spots and some dull ones, and a special concern for Jacob Joyce and Blake Saito, who both suffered injuries over the weekend. The approach stays the same: There are some good things to build on and some areas we need to improve. Put in another productive work week and trust that our best wrestling is still in front of us," said Head Coach Jordan Leen.
