ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brown softball (3-2) lit up the scoreboard in a 10-5 win over Youngstown State (0-10) to close out play at the Garnet and Gold Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 23).
The Bears collected six hits and drew seven walks, while taking advantage of three Penguin errors in the victory. Lily Berlinger, Jaime Ketter and Lilly Burns all drove in two runs.
Macy Borowski got the start for the Bears and allowed just two earned runs over three innings, striking out one batter. Edie Cobb threw two innings to pick up the win, allowing one earned run and striking out a batter. Alexis Guevara tossed the final two innings and struck out three batters.
"Great weekend to see a lot of great things and learn what we as a team really need to invest in our time this week," said head coach Mary Holt-Kelsch. "Excited to get back to work."
Youngstown State singled home the first run of the game in the first inning but Brown responded with Ketter and Burns each drawing bases loading walks in the bottom of the inning to give Brown the lead.
The Bears blew the game open in the second, plating seven runs for the second time this weekend. Berlinger started the scoring, singling home Leah Carey and Amanda Deng. Jasmine Hsiao singled home Berlinger and a bases loaded walk drawn by Burns made the score 6-1. On a strikeout by Maya Choksi, the ball got past the catcher and allowed Choksi to reach and Hsiao to score. The sixth run of the inning came on another wild patch that brought home Borowski. An error by Youngstown State's third baseman brought home Brown's seventh run of the inning to make it 9-1.
Youngstown State scored one run in the third and three in the fifth, taking advantage of two Brown errors, to make it 9-5.
In the sixth, Ketter picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to center to score Berlinger.
