Women’s Basketball Suffers Hard-Fought Loss to Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's basketball team (10-14, 4-7 Ivy) dropped their final home game of the season, 60-57, to the Harvard Crimson (20-3, 9-2 Ivy) on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Three Bears closed out Saturday's contest with three players in double figures. Junior guard Grace Arnolie led Brown in scoring with 17 points. Senior center Gianna Aiello and junior forward Beth Nelson scored the second-most points with 11 each.
Brown shot 42% from the floor, and 44% from beyond the arc in comparison to Harvard's 38% from the floor, and 20% from the arc.
"Super disappointed that we didn't pull off this great win especially for our senior class, as we celebrated our seniors today," Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc said. "We certainly wanted to get them a really big win on their home court today, and fell just short."
Competition remained tight from tip-off. Aiello, junior guard Mady Calhoun, Nelson, first-year forward Aima Ofunrein, and sophomore guard Olivia Young posted a combined total of 17 points in the first quarter. Harvard trailed by only four points heading into the second.
Both teams played an aggressive game ahead of the break. The Bears and Crimson both netted 14 points a piece in the second quarter. Brown held onto the lead by four points at the half.
"Our defensive intensity was really high-level. I thought the player really executed the game plan well. We were really trying to make it tough to get quality shots at the rim, and I think we did that throughout the game. The team took on that defensive mindset all week," said LeBlanc.
The Crimson went on a 10-point run midway through the third quarter, taking the lead out from under the Bears. A three-pointer from Calhoun gave the Bears a one-point extension for the time being. A last-second layup from Harvard's Harmoni Turner gave the Crimson the lead once again heading into the final 10 minutes.
Scoring continued for both teams into the final quarter. Arnolie made two free-throws with 30 seconds left on the clock, giving the Bears a one-point lead. Harvard's Elena Rodriguez would end Brown's lead with a layup with 20 seconds left in regulation. Turner sealed Brown's fate with a pair of made free-throws.
