St. Louis Scores OT Winner to Cap Men's Hockey's Comeback at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Ryan St. Louis struck for his second goal of the night 52 seconds into overtime as the Brown Bears (13-11-2, 9-9-1 ECAC) completed the comeback win over the Princeton Tigers (10-14-2, 5-12-2 ECAC) in a crucial conference game Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
With the win, the Bears improve to 9-2-0 over the last 11 games and jump the Harvard Crimson for seventh in the ECAC standings. Brown is four points back of Dartmouth and Cornell for fifth.
"I thought it was a really hard-fought hockey game," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought there was a ton of pace for both teams, it was physical, there wasn't a lot of room on the ice. It reminded me of playoff hockey, which is good for our guys to find a way to come out on the road in that playoff-type intensity.
"Some of the guys had good nights and I thought we got good efforts from the goalie on out. We're a really resilient group, we found a way at the end to tie it, and it was a really nice play in overtime to win it. It's a hard place to win on the road, it's a small rink and things happen quickly. I'm really proud of the guys, it was a really good hockey game."
Brown and Princeton skated through a scoreless opening period with the Bears killing off a pair of Tiger power plays and coming up empty on one man-advantage. Goaltender Lawton Zacher (26 saves) was strong from the hop with eight saves in the frame.
Brendan Gorman broke the deadlock with his 11th goal of the season 4:58 into the second to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Gorman collected a pass from from Alex Konovalov in the slot and beat Zacher with a quick shot.
The Bears tied the game with 6:14 remaining in the second as St. Louis wired a shot past Princeton goaltender Ethan Pearson (15 saves) for his seventh goal of the season. St. Louis caused an initial Princeton turnover below the goal line and Max Scott poked the puck to the junior for the slot goal.
Dean Bauchiero nearly broke the deadlock with two minutes remaining in the second, but his shot rang off the post.
After a major penalty assessed to Brown, St. Louis nearly scored a short handed goal nine seconds into the Tiger power play, but Pearson made the save and Noah de la Durantaye crashed into the net before the puck could cross the goal line.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead on the five-minute advantage as de la Durantaye tallied his fourth of the season 5:41 into the third period.
With 3:07 remaining in regulation, Ivan Zadvernyuk rifled a shot past Pearson for his third goal of the season to force overtime. Tanner Hartman picked up the assist on the play after a great forecheck from Mike Cataldo to cause a Princeton turnover.
Less than a minute into overtime, St. Louis found space in the heart of the Princeton zone and blasted his second goal of the game past Pearson for the win. Scott and Alex Pineau assisted on the OT winner.
