Women’s Basketball Falls to Penn 61-73

PHILADELPHIA, Penn.- The Brown women's basketball team (10-13, 4-6 Ivy) fell to the Penn Quakers (13-10, 4-6 Ivy) 61-73 at The Palestra on Saturday night.
The Bears saw three players finish in double figures. Senior center Gianna Aiello led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds. Upon returning from injury just a few weeks ago, Aiello continues to dominate and make her presence known on the court.
Junior guard Grace Arnolie followed Aiello with 17 points and four rebounds. Junior forward Beth Nelson netted 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.
"Definitely a tough game, obviously we were fighting for a different outcome," Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc said. "We let it get away from us there in the second quarter, and it's really tough to overcome a gap like that against a good team, like Penn. I think we got our defense and offense going just a little bit too late."
The contest opened with Penn earning a quick pair of points from free throws. Nelson quickly netted the equalizer with a jumper. Both teams played aggressively on the court, keeping competition tight. A triple from Penn's Mataya Gayle at the buzzer gave the Quakers an edge over the Bears. Brown posted 12 points in the first quarter to Penn's 15.
Aiello hit two layups in the second quarter, with sophomore guard Olivia Young hitting a jumper at the buzzer before the break. Penn held the Bears to six points in the second quarter. The Quakers led 33-18 at the half.
"It felt like we were late getting to our help spots. I think when things like that happen it's easy to splinter, and to not want to give up another cross-court pass three. We can start to have that slippage in our discipline on defense," LeBlanc said.
Brown came out of the break ready to fight back. The Bears netted a total of 25 points in the third quarter. Penn kept up with them, collecting 24 more points. Brown scored 18 points in the final 10 minutes, but were unable to make the comeback.
