Men's Hockey Suffers 2-1 Loss at Union
2/1/2025 8:10:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (9-10-2, 5-8-1 ECAC) were unable to complete the third period comeback and suffered a 2-1 loss to the Union Garnet Chargers (15-9-2, 8-5-1 ECAC) on Saturday at Messa Rink.
"Credit to Union, I thought Union played tremendous hockey. Defensively, they were aggressive, fast, and on us very quickly and they made it really hard on us," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we got away from our battle mentality and they seemed to be a little stronger on pucks at times tonight.
"That being said, we went 0-for-7 on the power play, and we need to find a way to score. We had plenty of opportunities on the power play, which has been pretty good of late. I thought we tried to be a little too perfect on the power play tonight."
Tyler Shea (24 saves) got the start between the pipes and turned aside a breakaway effort from Josh Nixon in the opening minutes of the first to keep the game scoreless.
Union scored the afternoon's first goal as Caden Villegas found the back of the net 13:21 into the period. The officials initially waved off the goal, but a six-minute video review overturned the call to give the Garnet Chargers the lead.
Brandon Buhr doubled Union's lead on the power play 10:34 into the second period. Buhr found the rebound from Cullen Ferguson's initial shot for his 13th goal of the season.
Zackary Tonelli cut into the Union lead with his second shorthanded goal in as many nights with 9:12 remaining in the third period. Max Scott forced a Garnet Charger turnover in the neutral zone and found Tonelli for the quick shot to beat goaltender Kyle Chauvette (25 saves)
The Bears pressed for the equalizer down the final stretch but were unable to even the score and force overtime.

GAME NOTES
- Tonelli is just the 11th Bear in the last 25 seasons to record multiple shorthanded goals in a single season. He joins Jack Maclellan as the only Bears to record man-down goals in consecutive games. Maclellan's came on March 13 & 14, 2010 in the ECAC Quarterfinals against Yale, a series Brown won.
- Both teams finished the night with 26 shots on goal with the Garnet Chargers blocking 16 shots compared to eight for Brown.
- Union finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play with the Bears finishing 0-for-7.
- Saturday night likely marked Brown's final game at Messa Rink, barring a playoff matchup. The Bears posted a 14-15-5 record in 34 games in the building.
