PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 15 Brown women's hockey (5-2-1) earned a 3-2 overtime win over Delaware (1-13-0) off a goal from India McDadi at Meehan Auditorium on Sunday (Nov. 9).
The Bears dominated the game, finishing with a season-high 54 shots, while allowing just 11. Rory Edwards picked up the win in net with nine saves.
Delaware was kept in the game by goaltender Charlotte Payne, who finished with 51 saves, and a Blue Hen defense that blocked 44 shots.
Brown had two power plays in the first period, coming up empty in both, but the Bears, who outshot Delaware 21-3 in the first, broke through late in the frame.
The first tally for Brown came from Avery Lian, who scored her first-career goal. The puck was cycled underneath Delaware's goal before being sent back out to Lian at the top of the far circle. Lian threw it on net and past Delaware's goalie to give Brown the lead at 18:25.
Less than a minute later, Brown doubled its lead. Martina Accardi brought the puck into Delaware's zone, sending it in front where Monique Lyons redirected the puck past Payne to give Brown the 2-0 lead after one period.
Delaware cut Brown's lead in half five minutes into the second. Edwards was screened in front of her goal and Tiana McIntyre fired one off the crossbar and end.
Under five minutes left in the second, Brown had a shot blocked that lead to a breakaway chance for Delaware. Edwards made the initial save on the one-on-one but the rebound was tapped home by Katelynn Charlton to tie the game 2-2.
A scoreless third sent the game to overtime where Delaware got the first shot on goal and Edwards swallowed up the shot. With Delaware entering Brown's zone, the Blue Hens turned over the puck with Isabella Gratzl picking up the steal. Gratzl gave the puck to McDadi who entered the zone and fired from the top of the near circle, beating Payne glove side off the inside of the post to give the Bears the win.
GAME NOTES
Brown will get back to ECAC play next weekend with home games against Dartmouth (Oct. 14) and Harvard (Oct. 15).
