PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 13th ranked Brown women's hockey team started the weekend strong with a 4-0 shutout win over Dartmouth at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.
Sophomore goaltender Anya Zupkofska made 26 saves for her third consecutive shutout to start the season. Freshman Isabella Gratzl (one goal, one assist) and junior Sam Broz (two assists) each had two-point nights for Brown, while freshman Martina Accardi scored her first career goal. Sophomore Monique Lyons and junior Margot Norehad also scored goals for the Bears. Freshmen Cadence Richards and Zoe Li both picked up one assist for their first collegiate points.
Brown was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 0-for-5 with the man-advantage, which included Brown killing off a 5-on-3 in the final minutes of regulation. The Bears outshot the Big Green 37-26.
Brown broke an early stalemate late in the first period with an even strength goal at the 17:30 mark. Right off the faceoff, Victoria Damiani sent a shot on goal from the blue line that was tipped in front by Broz, and the rebound went right to Lyons at the top of the crease who cleaned up the rebound for her fifth goal of the season to spot Brown the 1-0 lead.
The Bears used a breakaway to push the lead to 2-0 at 6:55 of the second period. Richards grabbed the loose puck in the defensive zone and sent a pass across center ice to Norehad, who went in ahead of the defense and sent a quick wrist shot past the blocker for the two-goal lead.
Brown struck for one more late in the period as Accardi netted her first career goal with 1.4 seconds left on the clock. Gratzl sent a shot off target that Broz corralled behind the net, then sent a centering pass into the slot that Accardi one-timed top shelf for the three-goal lead going into the second intermission.
The Bears put an exclamation point on the win with one more goal, courtesy of Gratzl with 1:01 remaining in the third on a wrist shot from out near the blue line. Li and Olivia Fantino each picked up assists.
