PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 13 Brown women's hockey (7-2-1, 3-2-1 ECAC) picked up its fourth-straight victory with a 4-3 overtime win over Harvard (5-4-1, 3-4-1 ECAC) on Friday night (Nov. 15) at Meehan Auditorium.
Monique Lyons finished the game with two goals, including the game-winner at 3:56 in the extra period. Lyons now has seven goals on the season and three-game winners this year. Isabella Gratzl and India McDadi also scored for the Bears. Gratzl, Lyons, McDadi, Sam Broz, Martina Accardi, Ava DeCoste and Jade Iginla all picked up assists for Brown.
Anya Zupkofska picked up the win (4-0-0) for Brown in net with 25 saves. Zupkofska allowed three goals on the night, giving up her first goals of the season, ending a shutout streak of over 180:00 minutes.
The scoring came quick in the first with Harvard beating Zupkofska 6:26 into the game.
Brown answered just two minutes later on the power play, as Gratzl found Lyons in front of the net and Lyons beat Izzy Whynot to tie up the score.
The tie was short lived as Morgan McGathey scored her second goal of the game 27 seconds later to put Harvard up 2-1.
Late in the first, Brown forced a turnover underneath the Harvard goal and Lyons passed back to Gratzl in between the circles. The first year, ripped a shot over the blocker to make it 2-2.
With just three minutes left in the second period, Brown turned the puck over as a pass off the boards behind the goal went right in front of the Bears' goal and Harvard's Zoe Boosamra's one-timer beat Zupkofska to give Harvard the 3-2 lead.
With just six minutes left in the game, Brown found itself down a player after a penalty. Harvard had the puck underneath Brown's goal but McDadi came out of the scrum with the puck. McDadi passed to Iginla and duo ran a picture-perfect give-and-go with McDadi making a move in front and finishing with a backhand to tie the game.
The Bears were forced to kill off a penalty in the last minute of regulation to send the game to overtime. Brown was then playing 4-on-3 for the first minute of overtime and finished off the penalty to get back to even strength.
Back to playing 3-on-3 the Bears earned possession with just over a minute to play. Broz weaved her way through the Harvard defense before Lyons opened up in front of the net. A quick pass to Lyons and a quick wrister sent the Bears' fans home happy.
GAME NOTES
Brown will head north as the Bears will make the trip to Clarkson (Nov. 21) and St. Lawrence (Nov. 22) as ECAC play continues.
