PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's soccer team (6-6-2, 2-3-1 Ivy) defeated the Columbia Lions (3-7-4, 1-4-1 Ivy) 1-0 on Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
I don't think it was pretty. Ivy League games are tough, but I'm really proud of our team, Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair Chase Wileman said. It's been a long month for our team, and just the resilience that we showed, with the fight and spirit tells you a lot about the group that I have.
Sophomore defender Stefano D'Agostini gave the Bears an early advantage, scoring a goal in the 16th minute of the match. Senior midfielder Mads Stistrup Petersen took a corner kick that Columbia goalkeeper Alexander O'Brien punched away. Senior defender Greyson Mitchell got the rebound, sending it to the middle of the box to D'Agostini for the score.
D'Agostini's goal marks his first of the season.
Brown outshot Columbia in the first half, 6-2. The offense evened out in the second half with the Lions posting 10 shots, and the Bears posting another six. The contest ended with both teams recording 12 shots.
Senior goalkeeper Henrik Weiper shut down Columbia's three scoring opportunities, keeping a clean sheet for the Bears.
Great feeling, and nothing better than an evening with a clean sheet, Weiper said. We defended well. A few moments were a little sketchy, but nothing major. A lot of credit goes to my defense line, and the whole team in general.
The Bears were awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, with Jamin Gogo Peters stepping up to take it. Gogo Peters' shot ricocheted off the post, with the rebounding shot flying high.
Brown held Columbia off from scoring for the remainder of the match, holding the 1-0 edge until the end of the full 90.
