PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown sailing teams closed out the regular season of fall competition last weekend, with the women winning the NEISA Fall Championship (Urn Trophy), while the open team earned podium finishes in all events.
"I am really proud of the entire team for closing out the regular season strong," Barry Family Director of Sailing Chair John Mollicone said. "The women's team has put up strong results all season and it was great to win the New England Fall Championship in conditions we have been working hard to improve in. The coed team put up another strong podium finish at the Schell Trophy, and did it without our top skipper who is injured. The freshmen showed how they stack up against the best in their class nationally, and finished a strong second place with three boats sailing. Finally, the group that won the 18-team Terrier Invite in convincing fashion showed how much depth we have on this year's team."
"I am excited for November, as we now shift our focus on preparation for three National Championships to close out the fall," said Mollicone.
The women's sailing team won the Victorian Coffee Urn Trophy for the NEISA Women's Fall Championship at Harvard this weekend. The event consisted of the top 15 women's sailing teams in New England. The teams battled it out in light and tricky conditions on the Charles River. The Bears closed the event out strong, beating second place Dartmouth by two points. Brown's senior Katharine Doble and sophomore Reese Corckran finished sixth in the A division, and juniors Laura Hamilton and Katherine Majette won the B division with only 34 points in 12 races.
The open sailing team also closed out the final weekend of fall regular season sailing strong. The Bears finished third overall out of the top 18 teams in New England at the Professor Schell Trophy for the NEISA Fall Open Championship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Junior Blake Behrens and senior Caroline Keeffe-Jones finished fifth in the A division while sophomore skippers Tyler Lamm and James Brock with junior and first-year crews Vera Allen and Dominic Ciccamaro combined to finish fourth in the B division after 14 races.
The open team also competed for the Nickerson Trophy at Tufts for the College Sailing Freshmen Championship, finishing second overall out of 14 teams, behind Stanford University. The Bears' Noah Stapleton and Phoebe Fogarty were second in the B division. Skippers Leila Pfrang and William Baker along with crews Michelle Kaneti and Elena Sun combined for second in the B division as well.
On Saturday, Brown won the 18-team Terriers Invitational at Boston University by 19 points over second place MIT. Sophomore Julian Dahiya and first-year Kyoko Tonkin dominated the A-division, finishing first in five out of six races and winning by 18 points. Sophomores Gabriela Collins and Marin Soderberg finished a close second in the B division.
