PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey (2-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) dropped its league opener 4-2 to Princeton (1-2-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) on Friday night (Oct. 24) at Meehan Auditorium.
The Bears had goals from Monique Lyons and Margot Norehad, who both scored their second goals of the season. Jade Iginla and India McDadi each finished the night with an assist.
Rory Edwards had a strong night in net, finishing the game with 31 saves.
Princeton got on the board first just over halfway through the first period as Edwards got too far from goal trying to play the puck. It was intercepted and a pass was made to Issy Wunder in front of the crease who put the puck in the net for the first tally of the game.
Late in the first period, Brown found itself trying to kill a penalty when the Bears forced a turnover leading to Lyons breakaway. Lyons managed to beat Princeton's goalie Taylor Hyland on the backhand for the shorthanded goal, tying the game 1-1 after the first 20 minutes.
Just four minutes into the second, a scrum in front of Brown's goal ended with the puck in the back of the net for the Tigers as Princeton took at 2-1 lead.
That lead lasted just over two minutes as the Bears took advantage of a 5-on-3 situation. Iginla circled the puck from the corner out to the point before sending it back to Norehad who was straight on. Norehad fired one past Hyland to knot the score at two.
About halfway through the third, Brown had a shot from the blue line blocked which led to a 2-on-1 situation for the Tigers, who beat Edwards to jump ahead 3-2.
Brown had chances throughout the rest of the period but could not find the back of the net before Princeton closed out the game with an empty net goal with 17 seconds left to play.
