PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey (9-9-1) shutout Sacred Heart (11-8-1), 3-0 to get back into the win column on Wednesday night (Jan. 8). Monique Lyons finished the night with two goals and Rory Edwards had 20 saves for her first-career shutout.
It was a dominant performance by Brown's second line as all eight points on the night for Brown were tallied by a combination of Lyons, Ava DeCoste and Sam Broz. Lyons finished with her first-career three-point night, adding an assist to her two goals. It is also the third two-goal game of Lyons' career.
DeCoste matched her career-high with three points, tallying a goal and a season-high two assists. Broz matched her career-high with her second two-assist game of the season.
The Bears dominated their first home game in more than a month, outshooting Sacred Heart 32-20. Brown jumped ahead early when Lyons picked up the puck in the corner and fired one top-shelf to beat Lauren Larson three minutes into the game. Lyons eighth goal of the season was assisted by Ava DeCoste.
Just under halfway through the first, DeCoste netted her ninth of the season after some quick passing from Lyons to Broz to the sophomore.
The final goal of the night came as Brown had a two-on-one advantage one minute into the second period. DeCoste passed up to Broz who found Lyons coming down the center of the ice. Lyons used a backhand to beat Larson and put Brown 3-0.
The shutout win was the first for the Bears since beating Rensselaer 1-0 in the first round of the ECAC Tournament last season (Feb. 24).
Brown is now 8-1-0 all-time against Sacred Heart but the three goals tonight are tied for the fewest in a game by the Bears against the Pioneers.
