CANTON, N.Y. – Brown women's hockey (10-9-1, 5-7-1 ECAC) took down No. 8 St. Lawrence (14-6-5, 8-2-3 ECAC), 4-3 in overtime as Monique Lyons finished the night with a hat trick. The Bears beat the Saints in Appleton Arena for the first time since 2005, breaking a 20-game losing streak.
"So proud of this team to come back on the road in this building," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "It is a big deal for this team and for this program. I think we took a step forward in building our identity, being hard to play against and being extremely resilient."
Lyons is the first Bear to collect a hat trick since Jade Iginla on Feb. 9, 2024. The freshman had four points in the game, marking the first Bear to collect four points since Olivia Fantino had four points against Franklin Pierce on Oct. 19.
After falling behind 2-0, Lyons scored her 10th goal of the season after quick passing from Ava DeCoste and Sam Broz led to a wrister from the top of the circle for the power play goal. Lyons goal came at 11:04 in the second but Saint Lawrence scored three minutes later to take a 3-1 lead into the final period.
Brown cut the Saints lead to one seven minutes into the third as Lyons found the net again. Broz, who finished the night with three assists, poked the puck out in front of the goal and Lyons ripped a one-timer off the pipe and in.
With less than three minutes to go in the game, Brown pulled Rory Edwards for the extra attacker and it paid off as Cameron Sikich sent the puck through traffic and past St. Lawrence's Emma-Sofie Nordstrom to tie the game and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, St. Lawrence took a penalty with 17 seconds on the clock, giving the Bears a 4-on-3. Sam Broz won the face-off but Sikich had her shot blocked. As St. Lawrence looked to clear the puck, Sikich blocked the clear, keeping the puck in Brown's zone. The puck went to Lyons who threw a back hand in front that was deflected past Nordstrom for the game-winning goal.
Brown outshot St. Lawrence 22-19 with Edwards collecting 16 saves on the night.
GAME NOTES
Brown will close the weekend at No. 7 Clarkson on Saturday with puck drop set for 3 p.m.
