Gymnastics Wins Home Opener over SCSU and Springfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Behind season-high scores on bars and floor, the Brown women's gymnastics team took first place in Sunday's home-opening tri-meet against Southern Connecticut State and Springfield. Brown finished the meet with 192.550 points, ahead of SCSU's 189.275 and Springfield's 183.875.
The Bears swept the top four spots on two events, with senior Maya Davis leading the way in first place on bars, sophomore Lindsay Van Eyk winning on beam, and sophomore Lindsey Yang winning on floor. Junior Liza Marcus took second on bars and tied for third on both beam and floor.
Brown started off the meet with a 47.450 on vault, led by Sophia Dewar at 9.625 in fourth place, followed by Jessica Lin and Umi El Mammann tying for seventh at 9.550.
The Bears followed that up with a new season-high on bars of 48.100 and swept the top four spots and five of the top six overall, led by a first-place performance from Davis at 9.775. Marcus followed in second at 9.725 and freshman Avery Walters landed on the podium in third place with 9.650. Sophomore Emily Ford took fourth place at 9.550.
On beam, Brown grabbed at least a share of four of the top five spots, with Van Eyk earning first place with a new career-high of 9.775. Yang took second place at 9.725, with Marcus and Jessica Lin finishing in a three-way tie for third with 9.675 apiece. As a team, Brown totaled 48.275 on beam.
Brown finished the meet strong on floor, setting a new season-high of 48.725, with all five athletes scoring at least 9.700. Yang took the individual title with a 9.800, followed by Walters at 9.750 to tie for third along with Marcus. Dewar tied for fifth overall with a 9.725, and Davis tied for seventh at 9.700.
Brown will have a bye next weekend before returning to action with the Stick It For The Cure tri-meet at New Hampshire against UNH and Yale on Sunday, February 9 at 1 p.m.
