PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown men's soccer team came up short in Tuesday night's hard fought battle with #18 Providence College. The Friars ultimately earned the win with a final score of 2-1.
"Really proud of the guys tonight. We went toe to toe against a very good Providence team on their field. It could have gone either way, and if we continue to perform like that the results will come. You also have to give credit to their No. 21 for the free kick he hit to win the game. We will dust ourselves off, get ready and go again Saturday," Head Coach Chase Wileman said.
The Friars struck first in Tuesday night's matchup, with their first goal coming in the 10th minute of the game. Providence's Bruno Rosa took a shot, and Harry Scarborough scored on the rebound to earn the Friars' first goal.
Lorenzo Amaral took the first shot of the night for Brown, but was denied by goalkeeper Lukas Burns. The Bears began to pick up the pace and bring the energy for the remainder of the first half but were unable to earn a point.
Defender Stefano D'Agostini would come in clutch around the 30 minute mark when he cleared the ball out of the zone, eliminating Providence's chances of capitalizing on the rush. D'Agostini played a key role in Brown's strong defense against the Friars.
The first half concluded with both teams having two shots on target.
The Bears went into the second half looking to retaliate early on. Brown's goal came just two minutes into the second half. Mads Stistrup Petersen took a free kick that Harri Sprofera sent into the back of the net, giving the Bears the equalizer.
In the 74th minute, the Friars' Luis Garcia capitalized on a free kick opportunity, giving Providence the 2-1 edge over Brown.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they begin their Ivy League play at Dartmouth.
