PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Katie McCallum and Zoe Lawrence scored for the Bears (2-4, 1-0 Ivy), but #6 Ohio State (8-0, 1-0 Big Ten) clinched a 5-2 win over Brown Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus.
"I'm really proud of the way we played today, competing with and pressuring Ohio State all over the field and scoring the most goals on them yet this season," said senior back Julia Hitti.
"We went into the game as an underdog and gave them everything they could handle for the first half of play," said Head Coach Britt Broady.
"Ohio State plays with speed and a hunger to score that rivals anyone in the country. They are fit, disciplined and well coached. Their goals against average before today was .43, to knock two in and be awarded a stroke is a step forward for our attack."
Ohio State scored to get the Buckeyes on the board first three minutes into the game. Hallie Brost was assisted by Anne Marie Krebs.
Five minutes later, the Bears responded as Katie McCallum scored to get the Bears on the board.
Through the second and third quarter, Katie Fitchner, Krebs, and Brenna Bough all tallied goals for the Buckeyes. Assists were credited to Makenna Webster and Claudia Thomas.
The Bears battled through the second and third quarter scoreless, but their defensive efforts did not go unnoticed. With constant pressure on the Buckeyes, Kylee Del Monte provided seven saves to support the team.
Battling to the end, the Bears were not backing down. On the final penalty corner of the game, Zoe Lawrence buried one off of a shot from Lucy Adams and Mikayla Walsh.
"Lucy Adams and Julia Hitti were exceptional today. They lead our team in moments where the game could have gotten away from us…. And kept the team fighting," added Coach Broady.
The Brown Bears finished their Ohio road trip going 1-1 for the weekend.
"This game was great preparation for Harvard next weekend, and we're looking forward to putting the learnings from this weekend into action at practice this week," said Hitti.
