Field Hockey Takes down Yale in Overtime
9/15/2024 4:42:00 PM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Juliette Meijaard and Katie McCallum scored for the Bears (1-3, 1-0 Ivy), battling through regulation and two overtimes, beating Yale (3-1, 0-1 Ivy), and carrying Brown to their first win of the season, and first conference win.
"There is no better feeling than a hard fought win with the people you work hard with every day. We played a full game, we never let up and we are so excited to keep improving," said Lucy Adams. "This was a special win for us."
"Our level of play has been very high. I'm so pleased we earned the win as a result of our efforts today," said Head Coach Britt Broady.
The Bears and the Bulldogs went scoreless through the first two quarters of the game. Lucy Adams had a good opportunity, but the shot was saved by Alexa Pitts.
Both teams consistently produced opportunities on either end of the field, playing back and forth for over 30 minutes of regulation.
Yale broke the scoring drought 30 seconds into the 3rd quarter when Bulldog Hettie Whittington recorded a goal, she was assisted by Poppy Beales.
With just under five minutes to go in regulation, Brown's Juliette Meijaard tallied a goal. The shot that was tipped out front came from Adams near the top of the circle, earning her the assist.
Meijaard's goal was just enough to tie up the game and send both teams into overtime. The first OT period went scoreless. Less than two minutes into the second, the Bears earned themselves a penalty corner off of a Yale yellow card.
Imogen Govan was sent to the corner for the third time, with all three appearances in overtime. Her third attempt included a pass up to Adams who handed it off to Katie McCallum who buried it. McCallum scored, pulling the Bears ahead and clinching a win for Brown.
"It was a hard fought battle and I'm sure Yale will have a strong season," Coach Broady said. "As the third strongest conference in the country, every Ivy game is a challenge."
