Late Goal From Kira Maguire Gives Women’s Soccer 1-1 Tie At Hofstra
8/29/2024 4:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A goal from Kira Maguire in the 88th minute helped preserve a 1-1 draw for the Brown women's soccer team at Hofstra on Thursday afternoon.
"I thought we started the game a little flat, which the coaching staff addressed at halftime," head coach Kia McNeill said. "The team showed great resilience and heart to come back late in the second half and get the tying goal. Hofstra is a strong team that consistently competes for championships in the CAA, therefore we're pleased to come away with a point on the road."
Hofstra opened the scoring in the 43rd minute off a free kick goal from Aimee Hodgson, prior to the Hofstra goal, Brown generated three shots and one on goal. Goalkeeper Bella Schopp stopped one shot in the opening 45 minutes.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, Brown controlled most of the play early on as Ayla Sahin had a chance to find the back of the net but her shot was stopped by Mackenzie Sullivan.
The Bears had a great chance to level the scoring off a free kick in the 72nd minute when the ball was driven into the box, a Hofstra defender headed the ball just past the goal line and out of play for a Brown corner kick.
Brown generated two consecutive corner kicks off of that free kick opportunity but they were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
The Bears found the back of the net for the first time this season as Joy Okonye found Naya Cardoza in the box, Cardoza danced around a Hofstra defender and the ball found Kira Maguire, who fired a shot into the bottom right corner to tie the game at one with 2:48 remaining in the contest.
Layla Shell and Ayla Sahin combined for four out of the Bears' six shots as Bella Schopp made one save in the draw.
Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they welcome Indiana to Stevenson-Pincince Field at 7:00 p.m.
