PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of late runs helped Princeton top the Brown baseball team by a score of 4-2 in a fast-paced pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Santhosh Gottam had a career day on the mound for Brown with career-highs of 8.0 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts on 117 pitches. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits while issuing two walks. His dozen strikeouts blew past his previous career-high of eight, which he set last year at Cornell.
Nathan Brasher went 2-for-4 with an RBI single to extend his on-base streak to 10 games, and now has a hit in eight of his last 10 games. Mika Petersen went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI on a safety squeeze. Reece Rappoli added a hit and run scored.
Most of the scoring came early from both teams as the Tigers put two on the board in the first. After putting the first two men on, a two-out ground ball found its way through the left side for a two-run single to spot Princeton the early two-run lead.
Brown answered right back with a run on two hits of their own, scoring when Brasher took an 0-2 pitch to the opposite field to plate Petersen. The Bears then tied it with a run in the second as Rappoli led off with a single, later advanced to third on a fly ball by Charles Crawford and scored on a safety squeeze by Petersen.
From there, both starting pitchers settled in with Gottam striking out five batters over a six-out stretch, including striking out the side in the fourth. He also worked quickly, retiring the side in order with a seven-pitch second inning and a nine-pitch sixth inning.
Princeton's Sean Episcope went 6.0 innings, setting down the final 10 batters he faced as part of a stretch of 14 Brown hitters retired in a row. Princeton pitching allowed just one hit and two baserunners after the third inning.
Princeton delivered the winning run in the eighth inning following a leadoff walk and an RBI triple with one out. They added an insurance run in the ninth courtesy of a two-out single and an RBI double.
Brown brought the tying run to the plate with a two-out double by Jared Jonson in the ninth but was unable to muster a big hit.
The Bears will conclude their five-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon when they host the University of Rhode Island. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
