#6 Men's Crew Takes Atalanta Cup with Varsity 8 Win Over #9 Dartmouth
4/20/2024 8:58:00 PM | Men's Crew
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The sixth-ranked Brown Bears re-claimed the Atalanta Cup with a Varsity 8 win over the ninth-ranked Dartmouth Big Green Saturday evening on the Seekonk River.
In addition to the V8 win, the third varsity eight took down the Big Green for a second win on the day.
"It's been a good rivalry with Dartmouth and every race was one we knew could go either way so it was a really exciting day of racing and we thought the effort from the team was outstanding," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "Every athlete, every oarsman, and every crew raced really hard. We were happy to get the wins in the third varsity and Varsity of course, and seeing the Varsity pull away in the second 1,000 was really the highlight of the day."
As the 5V8 crews began to race, a heavy rain erupted to provide challenging conditions for both Brown and Dartmouth. The Big Green took an early lead and extended throughout the race, posting a time of 6:13.93 for the win.
The sun broke through for the evening's second race and the visitors picked up their second win, crossing the line in 6:02.01 to edge out the Bruno crew by two seconds (6:04.22).
Brown's 3V8 held off the Big Green down the Seekonk and posted a time of 5:54.23 for a two-second victory over Dartmouth (5:56.13).
In the JV8, the Big Green got back in the win column after finishing with a time of 5:49.17 to narrowly beat the Bears (5:51.49).
After a two-year hiatus, Brown re-claimed the Atalanta Cup with the Varsity 8 win to close out the evening of racing. Nathan Swidler stroked the top crew and the Bears pulled away from the Big Green in the second half of the race, posting a time of 5:33.41 to win by nearly nine seconds (5:42.08).
The Bears are off next weekend before heading to Lake Carnegie to race the Princeton Tigers for the Content Cup on Saturday, May 4.
