#6 Men's Crew Grabs Two Wins at #1 Princeton
5/4/2024 1:04:00 PM | Men's Crew
PRINCETON, N.J. – The sixth-ranked Brown Bears picked up two wins over the top-ranked Princeton Tigers on Saturday, but the Tigers won the Varsity 8 to retain the Content Cup on Lake Carnegie.
"The standard of racing today was very high and it was exciting to witness the physical courage of both teams," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "I was really happy to see our 4th and 5th eights achieve victories and I was happy to see how hard we competed in our losses.
"We learned a lot about the speed of championship racing and what it will take to win the Eastern Sprints and the IRA. Fortunately, the fundamentals are strong. We compete well, we know how to move the boat, and we are stubborn in races. To win, we have to hit a very high speed early, staying relaxed and efficient. We have to hold the pace longer and close it out with intensity. We didn't expect it would be easy.
"I'm really pleased with the team spirit and unity and I'm confident we can keep building and improving through the championship races."
Brown's 5V8 held off the Tigers in the first race of the morning to pick up a victory with a time of 6:04.3, crossing seven seconds ahead of the home shell.
Bruno's 4V8 raced alongside Princeton to start the race before pulling away in the back half of the race for a comfortable win with a time of 6:00.5, nine seconds ahead of the Tigers.
The Tigers turned the tide in the 3V8 race and picked up its first victory of the morning with a time of 5:48.1. Princeton led by nearly a full boat and held off a late Brown charge for a three-second win.
The Tigers grabbed another win in the JV8, taking an early lead over Brown and slowly extending that lead through the race. Brown held tight for the majority of the race and finished with a time of 5:46.1, three seconds behind Princeton.
The Tigers retained the Content Cup in the Varsity 8, posting a time of 5:34.8 to finish the spring season undefeated. Brown held tight with the Princeton shell through the first half of the race before the Tigers pulled ahead in the second half for a 2.5-second win.
The Bears head to the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 19 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
