Women’s Basketball Runs Past Yale to Close out Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's basketball team capped its 2023-24 season on Saturday afternoon with a strong 76-57 win over Yale at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Senior Kyla Jones finished her sensational Brown career with a 23-point, 11 rebound performance for her second career double-double. Sophomore Grace Arnolie added 20 points, four assists and four rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Junior Isabella Mauricio also shot 50 percent from the field to finish with 13 points.
As a team, the Bears shot 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from beyond the arc, their second-highest percentage of the season, and shot 45.3 percent overall in the game. Defensively, Yale outrebounded Brown 42-35, but Brown forced 16 Yale turnovers and outscored the Bulldogs 26-11 off those miscues.
Jones finishes her career with 1,097 points, good for 15th in program history, and ranked third in the Ivy League this season with 17.1 points per game.
As a team, Brown's 16 victories and seven league wins are the most since the 2016-17 season. The Bears 7-7 league mark also finishes them in a tie for fourth place with Penn.
Prior to the game, Brown honored its four-member senior class of 2024: Jones, Grace Kirk, Mya Murray and Charlotte Jewell, all of whom were in the starting lineup.
Kirk got things started right out of the gate with a three-pointer to put the Bears on top. The teams went back-and forth until consecutive threes by Mauricio and Mady Calhoun put the Bears in front 18-14 with just over a minute to go, as Brown held an 18-16 lead after one.
Brown built a nine-point lead, its largest of the of the opening half, by the middle of the second quarter. Yale answered with a short run to make it 29-25 with just over a minute to go before Mauricio drained a three from the left elbow, then hit another with 35 seconds left to give Brown a 35-27 lead going into the locker room.
Arnolie got the lead to double digits for the first time with a layup at 7:23 of the third. Yale would get as close as seven on two occasions, including with a layup ahead of the horn to pull within 51-44 after three.
In the fourth, a 9-0 Brown run made it 60-46 as Ada Anamekwe grabbed a steal and took it in for a layup at 6:45, prompting a Yale timeout. Arnolie drained a three from the corner to make it a 17-point game with 4:46 to go, and a breakaway layup by Jones in the final minute capped the scoring in the 19-point win.
