Baseball Rolls Past Stonehill 14-5 in Midweek Clash

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A strong effort on the mound and at the plate helped lift the Brown baseball team to a 14-5 victory over Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium. All nine members of the Brown lineup reached base with eight picking up at least one hit.
Freshman outfielder Brady Dever reached base in all six of his plate appearances with four hits, two walks and four RBIs. Junior catcher Conor Cooke went 1-for-2 with four walks and two RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Mika Petersen went 3-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs, including a leadoff homer. Senior Reece Rappoli also tallied four RBIs on the day, while sophomore infielders Mark Henshon and DJ Dillehay each scored three times.
On the mound, sophomore Christian Keel picked up his first win of the season, going a career-long 4.0 innings in relief on 69 pitches, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out four and not walking anyone.
The victory snaps the Bears' eight-game losing skid.
The Bears wasted no time jumping on the board in the first inning when Peterson jumped on a 2-0 fastball leading off and crushed it through the wind out to right field for the early 1-0 lead.
Stonehill evened the game in the third inning, taking advantage of a double steal attempt with the run crossing the plate before the runner going to second was tagged out to end the inning.
Brown took control with a three-run bottom of the third inning, courtesy of a big two-out, two run double by Rappoli who went down and lined one into the left field corner to score Dever and Miles Newsome. Up next, Cooke legged out an infield single to shortstop that allowed Cooke to score and extend the lead to 4-1.
Dever extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning, driving a 2-0 pitch to the wall in right-center to plate Newsome and Henshon to provide some breathing room. Brown tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of a bases loaded walk by Cooke.
The Skyhawks got a pair of runs back in the seventh on three hits, with one of the runs coming unearned on a throwing error.
Brown put two more runs on the board in the home half of the seventh to go back up by six, 9-3. Newsome picked up an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Rappoli followed by lining a sac fly to left field for his third RBI of the day.
Stonehill got both runs back in the eighth inning, putting the first two men on before scoring on a two-out double.
Brown responded by batting around in the eighth inning and scoring five runs on three hits, highlighted by an RBI single from Petersen, a two-run single to the opposite field by Dever, and an RBI knock from Nathan Brasher.
Brown returns to action this weekend with a three-game Ivy League series at Harvard. First pitch of game one on Saturday is set for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.
