Men's Hockey Drops Conference Game to #19 Quinnipiac
11/15/2024 10:22:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (0-3-0, 0-3-0) came up just short against the 19th-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats (4-5-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) in the 2024-25 home opener at Meehan Auditorium, falling 3-2 in a back-and-forth contest.
"I was disappointed – I have higher expectations," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We have a lot of young guys, we're going to have ups and downs, but it's the second Friday in a row I thought we started a little tentative and passive. And that's the opposite of our identity and how we want to play.
"It's not good enough to come close, our goal is to win the game. I give Quinnipiac credit; I thought they played very good hockey. I think we can play a lot better. Again, it's really early, but that doesn't diminish my expectations for the team. I think we'll continue to grow and get better, but we have to find a way tomorrow to win a hockey game, especially at home.
"There are no moral victories, we just need to be better all around. It was a great crowd; I was excited to see that and I hope they come back. It's nice to play in front of some people at home."
The Bears struck first as Tanner Hartman finished a feed from Ivan Zadvernyuk for his first goal in a Brown uniform four minutes into the game. Brian Nicholas picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The Bobcats evened the score halfway through the first as Aaron Bohlinger struck on the power play for his first goal of the season. Jack Ricketts, a Holy Cross transfer, and Chris Pelosi assisted on the goal.
Quinnipiac took a 2-1 lead with 5:47 remaining in the first on a delayed Brown penalty. With the extra attacker on the ice, Aaron Schwartz found a Mason Marcellus rebound to beat Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (35 saves).
Tyler Kopff beat Quinnipiac goaltender Matej Marinov (18 saves) five-hole on a short handed breakaway 6:47 into the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Kopff blocked a shot in the defensive zone and collected a stretch pass from Max Scott to set up the man-down tally.
Elliott Groenewold tallied the game-winner with 5:07 remaining in the third period with assists going to Travis Treloar and Andon Cerbone.
The Bears pressed for the equalizer in the final five minutes with a power play and empty net but were unable to force overtime.
