PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey (7-5-1) took home the Mayor's Cup for the first time since 2014 with a 3-2 over Providence (7-7-3) on Saturday afternoon.
India McDadi scored the game winning goal 39 seconds into the third period and the Bears were able to hold on to the lead the rest of the way behind 19 saves from Rory Edwards.
Brown got on the board first as Olivia Fantino stole the puck in the offensive zone and found Jess Ciarrocchi, who used a nifty backhand to beat Providence's Hope Walinski just two minutes and 22 seconds into the game. It was Ciarrocchi's fourth goal of the season.
The Bears doubled their lead with just under five minutes left in the first period. Sam Broz sent one on net that hit the post but the loose puck was stuffed home by a sprawling Monique Lyons. Lyons sixth goal of the season was also assisted by Margot Norehad.
Providence got back in the game scoring 46 seconds into the second period and with just over seven minutes left in the period to send the game to the third tied at two.
Less than a minute into the third, Cameron Sikich kept the puck in the zone and got the puck to Ava DeCoste. DeCoste left the puck to Jade Iginla who, while falling down, sent a crossing pass to McDadi who deposited the puck into an open net.
With the lead Brown staved off multiple tying attempts from the Friars with Edwards coming up with three saves in the final 30 seconds after Providence pulled its goalie.
While Brown was 0-for-2 on the power play, The Bears played a clean game, not committing a penalty for the first time this season.
The three goals are tied for the most for Brown against Providence since scoring five goals in a win back in 2009. This is also the first win for Brown at Providence since 2011.
