Men's Hockey Extends Unbeaten Streak with Tie Against Air Force

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (2-3-2, 2-3-1 ECAC) and Air Force Falcons (8-8-1, 5-3-0 AHA) skated to a 1-1 tie Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. Both teams scored in the final seven minutes of the third period.
Brown pushed its unbeaten streak to four games with the result and are 2-0-2 during the stretch.
"I was proud of the guys in the fact that we seem to be a resilient team," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We scored our first power play goal, and I thought we were pretty good in the second period and Zacher was good again. But we can play a lot better. I thought we started slowly and got better as the game went on. We were a little disjointed and weren't connected in our play and that needs to change tomorrow.
"Again, I'm proud that the guys found a way to battle through. It's still young in the season but tomorrow is our fourth home game, we've tied the prior two and lost a close one to a very good Quinnipiac team. We need to find a way to get a win in our last home game before the break.
"Air Force is a good team; they play hard and that was their 17th game of the season. They've played some good teams, beaten Arizona State. Military academies traditionally are very tough, hard-nosed teams to play against, and they were."
Brown and Air Force skated to a scoreless opening period with chances at both ends of the ice. Lawton Zacher (26 saves) turned aside a penalty shot effort from Austin Schwartz in the final minute of the period following a penalty against Max Scott.
The Bears controlled the second period and finished the period with a 14-4 edge in shots on goal. Guy Blessing (30 saves) robbed Brian Nicholas of a goal halfway through the frame to keep the game even at 0-0.
Zacher turned aside a great scoring chance from Owen Dubois 4:37 into the third period to keep the game scoreless.
The Falcons struck with 6:51 remaining as Schwartz finished a feed from Andrew DeCarlo for his fifth goal of the season.
Nicholas re-directed a shot from Tyler Kopff with 2:33 remaining in the third to tie the game at 1-1. Ethan Mistry found Kopff at the top of the circle, who rocketed a shot into traffic where Nicholas tipped it by Blessing to force overtime.
Air Force's Chris Hedden was whistled for interference 35 seconds into the five-minute overtime period. However, Mistry was penalized for interference 16 seconds later to offset the infractions.
Nicholas had the best scoring chance of the overtime period 1:30 into the period, but his shot off the rush rang the crossbar.
Zacher turned aside a last-second shot from Will Staring to keep the game level and end in a tie.
In the shootout, Max Scott and Air Force sophomore Brendan Gibbons, a Wakefield, Rhode Island native, found the back of the net in the opening rounds. In the fifth round, Charlie Gollob scored the lone goal to give the Bears the shootout win.
