Men's Hockey Caps Weekend Sweep with Overtime Win at St. Lawrence
11/23/2024 10:25:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
CANTON, N.Y. – Brian Nicholas tallied his first collegiate goal in overtime to lift the Bears to a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence to cap off the weekend sweep in the North Country.
The road sweep over Clarkson and St. Lawrence marks the first since November 2004 and just the third sweep over the two teams on the road in program history.
"It was a great weekend, the guys were really resilient," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94." There were some ups and downs throughout the weekend, but we found a way to get out of the North Country with a sweep which I believe hasn't happened since 2004.
"It has the makings of being a really special group, a team that believes. And a team that believes in each other is a team that can go far. I'm proud of the guys and it'll make the road trip home much better."
The Bears and Saints were scoreless in the opening frame with one power play chance on either side of the ice. Lawton Zacher (30 saves) turned aside all 11 St. Lawrence shots faced in the frame.
Charlie Gollob struck for his second goal in as many nights 1:29 into the second period to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Gollob forced a turnover in the neutral zone and wired a shot over St. Lawrence goaltender Dominic Basse (23 saves).
Zacher and the Bears killed off an extended 5-on-3 power play for St. Lawrence minutes later to preserve the one-goal lead.
Bruno killed off another pair of penalties to close out the second period and take a 1-0 lead into the final period.
The Saints tied the game 6:32 into the third period as Jan Lasak finished a feed from Ty Naaykens on an odd-man rush.
Just over a minute into overtime, Nicholas collected a stretch pass from Ethan Mistry and beat Basse blocker-side on a breakaway to secure the victory and weekend sweep.
