PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey (3-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) beat No. 9 Quinnipiac (6-3-0, 0-1-0 ECAC), 2-1 in overtime as Monique Lyons scored the game-winning goal with 2.4 seconds left on the clock.
Lyons, whose first-career goal came earlier in the game, beat Quinnipiac's Kaley Doyle over the shoulder off the pass from Sam Broz to give the Bears the win.
Rory Edwards finished the night with a career-high 38 saves in goal to move her record to 2-0-0 on the season and came up with the biggest save of the night late in the third, stopping a penalty shot for the Bobcats.
"It was great to get a win to start ECAC play in overtime. The energy was awesome in here," said Lyons. "Rory is amazing. That penalty shot, we have seen her do that a million times in practice and for her to get a chance to do that in a game. That was awesome."
After a scoreless first period, Quinnipiac got on the board first with a goal from Jenna Donohue. The Bobcats continued to control most of the game as Quinnipiac outshot Brown 27-11 in the first two periods.
Halfway through the third, Brown finally found the equalizer from Lyons. As the Bears were on a 3-on-2 rush, Margot Norehad spun and found Lyons in front of the goal to beat Doyle and tie the game.
Just over three minutes later, with Brown on the power play, Quinnipiac had a breakaway and Maddy Samoskevich was taken down by Brown's Victoria Damiani. The duo crashed into Edwards and Edwards remained down as the referees awarded Samoskevich a penalty shot.
Edwards remained in the game and stonewalled Samoskevich to keep the game knotted at one.
After being outshot 39-18 in regulation, Brown controlled overtime, outshooting the Bobcats 4-0. With time winding down, Broz picked up the puck at the blue line and found Lyons wide open at the top of the near circle. Lyons ripped one past Doyle into the upper corner to send the Bears home with the win.
