CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- The Brown Varsity finished 16th out of 30 crews in the Championship Eight Event at the Head of the Charles. It was a drop of six places behind the 10th place finish last year. Brown's second entry finished 25th. In the Championship Four, Brown finished 9th out of 16 entries.

"We weren't able to hold the pace with the two crews," noted Coach Paul Cooke. "The standard is high and the team did their best to perform well. We have a lot of work to do."

Yesterday, in the Club Eight event, Brown posted the fastest time in the race but was declared ineligible because of the experience of one of the oarsmen in the Eight.

"The crew had a really good race and I am extremely disappointed that we had an ineligible athlete in the race. It's my responsibility to make sure we get things right. I let down the team and as a result, the crew doesn't get recognized for their strong effort."

Brown's second entry in the event finished 13th out of 36.

"The team has been working hard and it's tough to make mistakes and to fall short in our biggest competition of the fall season," said Cooke. "Despite the setbacks, I am excited about the season ahead. We have a strong team and a promising future."

Brown's Alumni Eight had a great weekend, finishing second overall in a field that featured many Olympians. Also, three graduates from last years' Ivy winning crew, Gabriel Mahler, Simon Hatcher and Ian Burnett, took home gold medals in their respective Championship Events.
